SWEA Members Unwrapping the Common Core

Jennifer Hammer, Pleasant Valley Grade 3 Teacher, and Melissa Potamianos, Orchard Hill Grade 2 Teacher, pictured above with Learn Zillion co-founder Eric Westendorff, were selected last year to be part of the CT Dream Team.  A group of 100 educators from around the state who came together for 3 days of intense training and professional development focused on the Common Core.  This dynamic duo participated in the Connecticut TeachFest program, sponsored by the State Department of Education and Learn Zillion to create resources for educators that can be found on the CT Common Core web page.  With the April training under their belts the two became facilitators at Summer Academy, an opportunity for almost a 1000 CT Teachers to dig deeper into the Common Core and create materials that can be used in the upcoming year.  On her experience as a Dream Team leader Hammer noted, “Teach Fest was one of the best professional development opportunities of my career. To be able to collaborate with like-minded teachers and create something that I could immediately use in my classroom was so powerful. And then to see almost 1,000 other CT teachers get that opportunity in July was amazing!” Information about these opportunities is provided in the links throughout.  The SWEA community is proud to congratulate Jennifer and Melissa for their outstanding efforts!
