Teachers Meet with Legislators

Patti Stamper, Representative from Timothy Edwards Middle School, displays an autographed copy of Elizabeth Natale’s Op-Ed piece in the Hartford Courant; Why I Want to Give Up Teaching. Stamper joined a dozen SWEA members in Hartford on Wednesday, January 29th at one of the regional CEA sponsored Teacher Meetings with Legislators to discuss the Evaluation Process, the Smarter Balance Program and the Common Core initiatives. Natale’s piece (link here) struck at the heart of frustrations felt by a great number of educators and her statement that, “Unfortunately, government attempts to improve education are stripping the joy out of teaching and doing nothing to help children,” resonates far and wide amongst teachers at all levels. Stamper, a 20 year veteran of the classroom, spoke eloquently concerning the challenges the new teacher evaluation system is creating for educators.
